The new Spanish Quantum Alliance (SQuA) brings together 53 organisations to accelerate the business and industrial development of quantum technologies in Spain.
The global race to control data processing and information security has entered a phase in which traditional computers are beginning to show their physical limits. In this transitional scenario, the commercial viability and technological sovereignty of states depend on their ability to build strong business networks. Spain has now taken a step in that direction with the creation of the Spanish Quantum Alliance (SQuA), the first national association dedicated exclusively to structuring the development of quantum technologies across the country.
The initiative, which has established its operational headquarters in Bilbao, has not emerged in isolation, but rather as a structural response to the demands of a market that requires critical mass in order to compete. Promoted by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service, together with the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the organisation was formally presented during the international Q-Expo 2026 event. By bringing together 53 founding organisations from the outset — a spectrum ranging from IBEX 35 corporations and multinational technology companies to specialised startups, universities and research centres — the alliance seeks to address one of the long-standing challenges of Spain’s innovation ecosystem: the fragmentation between laboratory discoveries and their application to companies’ bottom lines.
